Collecting Food Waste
Cwm Harry’s food-waste collection is growing steadily. At present we provide a service to 10,000 households, commercial businesses and local schools in Newtown, Welshpool, Montgomery and some of the larger villages of Montgomeryshire.

Business and Trade Collection Service
Does your business generate food waste? We provide an at-cost collection service to many businesses in the area: cafes, restaurants, hotels, works canteens, schools, shops, care and residential homes.
We can provide you with a range of collecting bins to suit your needs. The number of collections we make each week is determined by the volumes of waste which you produce.
The first thing we offer prospective customers is a waste audit so that both parties can evaluate what is required.

I have found Cwm Harry's service unbelievably helpful. It has transformed our work in the kitchen. Separating the food waste means that we remove it from the kitchen every day, and put it into the outside bin. The smell coming from the rubbish has reduced and the bags are much lighter to handle. It's difficult to put into words how pleased I am with the service.
Neil Roberts, chef and landlord, The Waggon & Horses, Newtown
Cwm Harry's service is very efficient: they collect from us three times a week. The change in routine when we first started didn't cause any problems, though it took a little time to get used to it. Now everyone uses it and thinks that it is really good. I'm glad that we are no longer throwing food away and instead we are doing something for the environment.

Why bother to collect food waste?
1. General rubbish smells much better – if it smells at all – and the bags are lighter to lift.
2. Dogs, cats, rats don’t tear open rubbish bags if they don’t smell of food waste – which means litter isn’t blown round the streets.
3. Food waste can be turned into a nutrient-rich compost, or a source of green electricity.
4. If food waste goes to landfill it will decompose and produce methane which then escapes into the earth’s atmosphere. Methane is known to damage the ozone layer.
5. There is a shortage of landfill sites. Reducing the amount of waste reduces the pressure on these sites.
6. In the near future the council will be fined £200 for each tonne of waste sent to landfill. Removing ‘wet waste’ from domestic rubbish will significantly reduce the weight of waste going to landfill and reduce this needless waste of our money.
What can go into the bin?
All items of food, cooked and uncooked, can go into the bin:
1. Vegetable peelings
2. Tea bags
3. Fruit skins
4. Cooked food
5. Leftovers from a meal
6. Food past its use-by date
7. Meat and meat products
8. Meat bones
9. Egg-shells
10. Pet food
PLEASE do not include non-food items

Joining the service
Cwm Harry provides the householder with a kitchen caddie, a roll of bags and an outdoor bin.
Cwm harry collects each week on bin day. Just set out your bin on that day – there’s no need to contact us. Please make sure that your bin is clearly visible to the collection team.
The Cwm Harry bins are costly to supply but essential to providing a good quality of service. We hope that you will regard them as your own, and take good care of them.
Need more bags? Report a problem
We deliver a roll of 52 bags every quarter. Give us a ring if you run out in the meantime. If you have any problems with your bins or with collection please ring us and we will try to sort it out.
Number your bin
Please feel free to number or decorate your bin so that it is easy to identify.
Care of your bin
Simple measures can help keep your bin pleasant to use:
Keep the lid on the caddy to keep flies off the food waste.
A wad of paper placed in the bottom of the bin will absorb any fluid that leaks out.
Wipe the bin with a hot, damp rag to clean it.
Give yourself a clean bag if you have thrown away scraps which smell strongly e.g. curry left-overs.
Change the bag more frequently in hot weather
